Weight Management, not Loss

I recently changed the wording of the Weight Loss Visits to be renamed Weight Management. I don't know why it was bothering me so much when I would think about the name, but something was rubbing me wrong about having consultations with patients, where some had a mind set that they needed less, they need scarcity in order to attain health. That's what dawned on me one day after seeing a patinet that was eating 900 calories a day and was exhausted, self flaggelating, in order to try to be healthier.
That is not the approach I want to have. I want robust health, I don't want a scarcity mentality for those that see me. I desire for them to eat, to have a relationship with food that can include pleasure, not shame. We need nourishment to survive! Shouldn't we try to enjoy it if possible? I don't mean in a hedonistic way, but a way where we benefit from the nourishment the food provides, the fuel we absorb from it, and also enjoy the process of planning to eat and creating meals and eating them. Just a thought. Every person is different, every consultation is different, but this is a pattern that has emerged for me over the past several years of treating weight, we don't understand food. We don't understand how to eat, what to eat, when to eat. We are a species that has divorced the understanding of the fuel we need to survive. I hope to help a little with reconciling that relationship. So if you want to see me, we will have a Weight Management discussion. And it WILL include a lot of questions from me about your food intake. And no matter what, I hope you find a relationship with your fuel source that brings energy, life, creativity, and maybe and some pleasure!
